On June 13th, 22 campers and nine leaders filed into the valley for Foundation Camp, a two week camp equipping campers on leading and serving.

Helen Hale, 16, was a first time foundation camper this year who heard about it through a friend. “A friend told me that he was going to Foundation Camp and asked if I would consider going as well,” she said. After learning more about camp through the Living Waters’ website, she decided to attend.

Each day was filled with many activities between morning devotions, class time, team adventure challenges (TAC), and learning about the different ways they could serve at camp. For Helen, the TAC training was her favorite.

“I enjoyed the challenging games because they forced me to strategize, plan, and work with other campers.” Besides TAC, Helen enjoyed making new friends and having a scheduled devotional time with the Lord.

But, Foundation Camp isn’t all fun and games. It presents many challenges by forcing campers into high pressure situations for which they need to develop a plan. One of them was planning for the iconic camping trip to Devil’s Lake where the campers are responsible for creating the packing list.

“For me, one of the most challenging things about FC was the planning of the mid-week camping trip. It was stressful because we didn’t really know what we were doing or the mistakes we were making,” Helen said.

When it was all said and done, campers walked away with valuable knowledge about themselves and their relationship with God.

“One of the biggest things I learned was that I can be a leader. I always wanted to be one, but didn’t think I could. Foundation Camp taught me that I have the capability to lead,” Helen said, “I also learned the importance of taking time to pray each day God can work through us when we pray and He responds to our prayers if we take the time to listen to Him.”
